Roasted seaweed snacks are already a bestseller in every convenience store, and homemade ones cost a fraction of the price. Nori sheets need barely a minute in the air fryer to turn deeply crisp, brushed with just sesame oil and salt. Watch them closely, since the gap between perfectly crisp and burnt is measured in seconds.

Single layer, always. Crowding the basket steams food instead of crisping it. Tap any ingredient to open its converter.

Method

4 steps · 7 minutes 0 of 4 done
  1. Lightly brush both sides of each nori sheet with sesame oil using a pastry brush, just enough to see a faint sheen.

    For this step

    • 4 nori (seaweed) sheets
    • 1 tsp sesame oil
    • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  2. Cut each sheet into quarters and stack loosely in the basket, or lay flat if your basket is large enough.

  3. Air fry at 150°C / 300°F for 60 to 90 seconds, watching the whole time. It goes from raw to crisp very fast.

  4. Sprinkle with salt and sesame seeds while warm and let cool a minute; they crisp further as they cool.

    For this step

    • 1 tsp sesame oil
    • a pinch fine salt
    • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Air fryer notes

  • Cook at 150°C / 300°F and preheat for 2 to 3 minutes for the crispiest result.
  • Keep everything in a single layer with space around each piece. Overcrowding steams food instead of crisping it, so cook in batches if your basket is small.
  • Shake or turn halfway, and check a few minutes early, since air fryers cook faster than ovens and every model runs slightly differently.

Cook's tips

  • This one lives or dies on attention. Stand by the air fryer rather than setting a timer and walking off.
  • A light hand with the oil matters. Too much and the sheets go soggy instead of crackly.

Make it your own

  • Dust with furikake or a pinch of chilli flakes before air frying instead of plain salt.
  • Stack two sheets with a very thin layer of sesame oil between for a double-thick chip.

Storing & reheating

Airtight container at room temperature for 3 days. They lose crispness fast if left uncovered, since nori pulls moisture from the air.

Frequently asked

How long do nori chips take in an air fryer?

Just 60 to 90 seconds at 150°C / 300°F. Nori is thin and burns quickly, so watch closely rather than walking away.

Why did my seaweed chips turn out chewy, not crisp?

Too much oil, or they weren't fully cooled before storing. Brush on the lightest possible film of oil and let them cool uncovered before sealing.
