How butter is measured
In the US, butter is usually sold in sticks. One stick is 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces, or about 113 grams. A standard 1-pound (454 g) pack contains 4 sticks. US butter wrappers are printed with tablespoon markings so you can slice off exactly what a recipe needs.
Outside the US, butter is typically sold in 200 g or 250 g blocks and measured by weight, which is why so many recipes call for grams. Because butter is dense and consistent, these conversions are reliable, unlike flour or sugar, the weight of a cup of butter barely changes with how it's packed.
