How butter is measured
In the US, butter is usually sold in sticks. One stick is 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces, or about 113 grams. A standard 1-pound (454 g) pack contains 4 sticks. US butter wrappers are printed with tablespoon markings so you can slice off exactly what a recipe needs.
Outside the US, butter is typically sold in 200 g or 250 g blocks and measured by weight, which is why so many recipes call for grams. Because butter is dense and consistent, these conversions are reliable — unlike flour or sugar, the weight of a cup of butter barely changes with how it's packed.
